Its important to focus
Focusing on one niche yields better results than mixes

One of the complains I've seen on reddit hundreds of times is something along the lines 'So I play a sniper with a melee backup of bear arm melee when things get hot, but I'm not satisfied with my damage, how would you tune up this build?' and a screenshot of a 'rifleman' build that has 14 STR and 5 Luck. Issue that these players are facing is that they didn't satisfiy any niche with their characters, they didn't follow any design theme, they wanted a gun and a melee backup, and this will ALWAYS suck. You don't need a backup. A well executed sniper shouldn't let anything in melee range. Why waste dozens of bullets and then switch to melee to finish, when you can deny the monsters any chance to get near you, bullet or two per monster? The only characters that could actually benefit from backup are melee characters in need of ability to remotely cripple wings, which can be accomplished by as little as 2-3 perk points investment. Pick your niche, adjust it to the theme, and forget about backups which sole purpose is to slow you down. You'll find more about niches and themes, and templates on how to combine them.
